Happy New Year! I trust that your holidays have been merry and bright. At the same time, I hope that you have been able to recuperate from all the festivities left and right.

I love celebrations but I want to make sure I am also mindful of the tons of waste such gatherings produce. Instead of throwing just every single thing that is left unfinished especially when it comes to food, keep in mind these simple steps:

  1. RSVP’s are good! Get a general idea of how many people will come to celebrate with you. I know Filipinos are not so accustomed to confirming and being firm with their decision to come or not to come but if you can encourage them to make it worth their time to really come by letting them know what is in store for them at your gathering, chances are they will confirm. It is also all right to inform them about the importance of a head count so you can make sure you have enough of what everyone needs. At the same time, assure them that if they are already booked and cannot come, you would also be fine with it.
  2. Over prepare but within what you estimate is the ideal number of guests based on confirmations. Prepare a little bit more that how many you expect to come. It is better to be safe than sorry.
  3. Serve the food fresh. Make sure you inform your guests that you may be reached for special dietary requirements as you of course would like for everyone to go home fed and happy.
  4. Offer your guests to bring home some of the leftover foods. Some of them will be shy to ask but if you offer, chances are they will go for it. Almost everyone wants a little more of the good stuff served at a gathering. Not only does it remind them of the wonderful memories shared, it also helps in lessening the need to prepare more food in the coming days.
  5. Make sure you put leftover foods in airtight reusable containers to keep the food fresh and clean so that it can be eaten the day or days after the event.
